For those of you who know me, I am very talkative....today, however, I was speechless. I learned during our monthly administrator's meeting that I had been named Principal of the Year. I found out via a telephone call from my father, who is a retired high school principal. As a matter of fact, he was my high school principal, and he serves as my daily inspiration for wanting to help children and teachers!
Sitting among an extraordinary group of talented and compassionate educators, I am completely humbled by this honor. As I looked around the room today, I am honored to work with the administrators in our district. No matter what negative press public education receives, these men and women continue to fight the good fight each day working to advocate for their students and teachers...and our Kershaw County community. It's our time to work together and continue to serve as a powerful conduit for what we feel is important - our students. Despite all the peripheral "stuff' whirling around in the world, state, and our local community, it is a great privilege to be able to get up and come to work and know that, in Kershaw County, we are all still working together to get to the finish line together.
My amazing faculty and staff greeted me when I arrived back on campus with a special "student-led" tribute. THEY truly make me look good each and every day. And, I am honored to work alongside them - Thanks to everyone for making today a special day for me....I guarantee that tomorrow will also be pretty special, too. You see, each day at DME is special!

Last week our fifth graders shared speeches during the annual Citizenship Assembly. The speeches were well-written and quite impressive. Here are some great excerpts from the speeches that Mrs. Holmberg shared with me: “Citizenship isn’t something you do for a reward—it’s something you do because it’s right.” Cheyenne Wheeler “Citizenship is showing people what kind of person you are through your actions.” Austin Howard “Citizenship is caring for others, treating others with respect and participating in important events for our community and world.” Cassie Szymanski “Another part of being a good citizen is being a leader by setting good examples and making the right choices.” Tanner Rapp “Dr. Seuss once said, ‘Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.’ If we all simply do our parts to be good citizens, we can all create a simply great community.” Jalisiah Sanders Congratulations to Jalisiah Sanders who won the Citizenship Speech contest. This was an excellent opportunity to learn more about public speaking!!!

On Friday night there were no stars, no clouds, no moon. Then little transparent things started falling off the sky. They looked like someone was crying. Is it an old cloud that’s dying and someone ripped it up into little pieces? It was a wonderful night to stay inside. I like rainy days, but sometimes I hate them. This wonderful night was there forever. It did not want to go to another planet. It stayed in ours. It went to another county, but it stayed on our planet. On Saturday morning it came back. I put on my raincoat, went outside, and rode my scooter to school with my family. The edges of learning were wet, the grass was wet, and the earth was muddy. Worms were happy. They were like saying, “More mud!” The sound in the road of the dripping water, was sweet like chocolate with vanilla caramel in the inside. We went inside. My mom made hot chocolate at night. The next morning, it was gone, but it was outside still for me.

I met with our wonderful PTA yesterday. Boy, our Spring Carnival is really going to be a blast this year! They have been working diligently to plan and coordinate efforts to make this day a great event for everyone while working hard to raise some much-needed funds which will help our school this and next year with the purchase of supplies, such as math workbooks, copy paper, ink cartridges, etc. The dunking booth - at the request of our students - will be a highlight of the day. In fact, Kershaw County School Board Member Mara Jones has already "signed up" to be a willing participant! Of course, Mrs. Benson and I will take our turn there, too. Who plans to throw the first pitch????

The first grade students at Doby's Mill Elementary brought in 100 pennies each to celebrate the 100th day of school. The students asked other classes at the school to join them in collecting pennies for the pets at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter in Camden. The first graders were able to donate $450.00 to Sharon Jones from the shelter. This is the second year the first grade students have collected pennies. They are hoping to top this donation on the 100th day of school next year.
Save those pennies!

Today is Dr. Seuss’s birthday! And, his spirit was alive at DME today! We had several wonderful guest readers who visited classes and read some of Dr. Suess’s favorite fictional works to our students. In fact, some of our guest readers included: Alma Gallagher, Thomas Bell, Derrick Stanley, Kevin Rhodes, Heather Hoopes Matthews, Don Brewer, Nissary Wood, Brenda Golden, Gabriel DiBiase, Linda Wilhite, Bonnie Krapf, Estelle Benson, Kathy Brand, Mandy Freeman, and Sarah Holmberg.
I actually sat in with Heather Hoopes Matthews while she read to Mrs. Mill’s class. When she finished reading There’s a Wocket in my Pocket, Steven asked her to read Green Eggs and Ham! What is your favorite Dr. Seuss book? I look forward to hearing your responses and memories!
A special thanks to Mrs. Brand for arranging this special day for our students!!!! Also, thanks to Mr. Tim Hopkins, Executive Director of Elementary Education, for coordinating this celebration of literacy district-wide!

Mrs. Amanda Cook's 4th grade class was selected to participate in a U-Stream video conference from the Rick and Bubba syndicated radio show. Green Eggs and Ham was read by the radio hosts and watched via the smart board.
Check this out....too cool.
Here is the link that shows all of the schools that participated...our school is there!

Good morning! We survived another rainy Monday, but I can't complain - the weekend weather was gorgeous. I hear that more rain is in the forecast today, though. Yesterday, we had Hats for Heroes in conjunction with our Relay for Life activities to raise funds toward our goal of $10,000 for the year. We are on the way to reach our goal....next weekend will yet provide another opportunity for your family to join our festivities at our annual Hot Dog sale at the Elgin IGA. Join us next Saturday, March 13, for a hot dog....can you believe it's already March?

I still cannot believe that just a week ago we were preparing for the possibility of snow! And, snow it did. Last Friday, after we hurriedly made it through the grocery store, I took my two boys home and waited. Well, we didn't have to wait too long because, as you know, at 3:30 p.m. the snow began to fall. Gunnar and Zane stayed in the yard from 3:30 - 6:30 playing basketball and football as the snow fell. I really thought that it would end as soon as it became dark, but to our amazement, the snow continued. When we turned on the lights around 10:00 p.m., the snowfall on the back patio furniture proved me wrong. When the boys awoke Saturday morning, they quickly donned their "snow" clothes and headed outside to make a snowman for our neighbor, Mrs. Brand, and explore the beauty of their true "first" snowfall. Even with all the snow, we put out our canned foods for the Boy Scouts who did manage to come around and collect food donations! What an awesome weekend!
This weekend is supposed to be 60 degrees....got to love the weather in South Carolina!!!

Our fifth grade teachers along with our outstanding Media Specialist hosted our annual voyage to Ellis Island today. All of our fifth graders reenacted arriving on Ellis Island during today's immigration simulation. The students had to design their passports and then make it through all of the "stations" on their arrival through immigration! What a great way to explain through a reenactment of this important time in our nation's history! Thanks teachers for making today's lesson "real" and authentic. It is always an experience that I know the fifth graders will remember!
Ask your child if I sent him/her to the brig, the infirmary, or to the translator!!! Also, thanks to our volunteers today (Mrs. Timbers, Mrs. Barton, and Mrs. Irwin) for making the event a success!!!!

Members of the American Legion, Post #195, talked with 2nd graders at Doby’s Mill Elementary about our country’s flag. Students learned how to properly display the flag, how the flag has changed through the years, and how to properly fold and take care of the flag.
